Furnace Troubleshooting Tips

There’s nothing cozier than cuddling up on the couch with a good book on a cold winter’s day unless, that is, your furnace isn’t working! Furnaces, like most major appliances, need regular maintenance in order to work properly. If they aren’t maintained, they can begin to fail, leaving you without heat when you need it most. 1. Check your thermostat.

Someone could have accidentally turned it off or turned down the heat. Make sure your thermostat is set to "heat" and is at the desired temperature. If so, turn it up a few degrees to see if the heat kicks on.
 

2. Swap out thermostat batteries.

If you have a battery-powered thermostat, your issue may be as simple as changing your old batteries out for some fresh ones.
 

3. Check your circuit breakers.

It's possible a fuse could have blown without you noticing. Check your fuse box and make sure the switch marked "furnace" or "HVAC" is switched on.
 

4. Replace the furnace filter.

A dirty air filter can cause your furnace to overheat and shut down. Make sure you keep your air filter clean and swap it out every 1-3 months to ensure proper airflow.
 

5. Make sure the fuel source is on.

If you have a gas or propane furnace, your fuel valve may have been turned off by accident. Remember to be careful anytime gas is involved, and if you smell gas coming from your furnace, open the windows to air out your home and call an HVAC professional immediately.
